Dear Hill Families:
We have all been personally affected by the current economic crisis our country is facing. We are experiencing the most significant economic downturn in the United States since the Great Depression. Due to these financial difficulties Denver Public Schools has already experienced a reduction in funding from the State of Colorado. Next year, those reductions will be even greater.
In the face of these budget pressures, the district’s priorities are clear:
- Maximize the resources in our schools and limit cuts to schools as much as possible; and
- Give schools maximum flexibility to spend their dollars to best meet the needs of their students.
Currently, 94% of the district’s operating budget is spent directly in our schools with the remaining 6% spent on central support services. As a result, there is simply no way the district can absorb these funding reductions without impacting school budgets.
In February, I will learn more about how our 2010-11 school budget will be impacted and I will share that information with you. Today, I can share with you that the district will consider each school’s individual situation. And, the district has made a commitment to limit cuts in the classroom as much as possible.
In the coming weeks I look forward to working with our Collaborative School Committee (CSC) to review our 2010-11 budget and make sure it is aligned with the priorities of our school community and the needs of our students. I welcome all parents to be part of our conversations about these important issues.
Thank you for your ongoing support of your student and our school. I would especially like to thank those families that have supported our students by donating to our PTA Dollars-a-Day fund. These monies are used in direct support of a wide variety of academic and enrichment activities.
Sincerely,
Don Roy
Principal
