Mr. Tabb – Math Classroom Rules and Expectations
Students are free to suggest a solution to any issue as long as it does not cause a problem for someone else, including me. The following outlines guidelines for behavior that can allow each student to be successful.
- Students are expected to be in their seats and facing the front of the room during class-wide discussions. Only one person should be talking at a time; side conversations are very distracting. During group exercises, students are expected to stay with their assigned group, stay focused on the group assignment, refrain from using loud voices, and avoid interfering with other groups.
- Each student is expected to follow directions the first time and to follow our posted classroom expectations:
· Be PROMPT and in your assigned seat before the bell rings.
· Be PREPARED with your book, math notebook, and supplies.
· Be PRODUCTIVE and on task with class assignments.
· Be POLITE and respectful of others.
· Be POSITIVE that you will succeed with initiative and effort.
- You are expected to be in your seat and quietly following our beginning-of-the-period procedures before the bell rings. The bell does not start the class, YOU start the class. The procedure steps are:
1. Record the homework assignment in your Student Planner or on the Homework Log in your Math Notebook. If there is no assigned homework, write “no homework”. You choose the method that is most convenient for you, but I expect you to do one or the other.
2. Place last night’s homework in the center of your work tables to be collected.
3. Record today’s main classroom assignment on the Daily Journal Log of your math notebook.
4. Begin today’s warm-up exercise. If you finish before we begin our class discussion of the warm-up exercise, please be patient with your classmates.
5. While you are completing the warm-up exercise, I will pass out the prior night’s homework. You will be given an opportunity to ask questions before we begin today’s agenda.
- When I need your undivided attention I will use the Hill Campus “quiet signal” and I will stand in front of the Promethean Board with my hand in the air. If you see me with my hand up, help get your classmates’ attention by raising your hand. If I think you cannot see me while you are working in your group, I may say “hands up. I will count down from five to give you time to stop what you are doing. ” The five steps of the “quiet signal” are:
1. My hand is up.
2. Your hand goes up.
3. Stop what you are doing.
4. Look at me.
5. Listen to my instructions.
- The teacher dismisses the class, not the bell. Stay in your seat when the bell rings at the end of the period until you are dismissed. No one will be dismissed until the room is orderly and clean. This is a responsibility of the entire class.
- You will be issued one bathroom pass per week. Use them wisely. Come prepared with your book, math notebook, and supplies every day. Use the passing period to take care of your bathroom needs and to get a drink of water. Unless I have given you specific permission, you will lose hall pass privileges if you leave our floor No passes will be issued during the first 10 minutes or last 10 minutes of the class.
- Work without the standard school heading will be returned to you to be redone.
- Be a learner and a teacher! Follow our group work procedures and listen to others’ ideas and be willing to share yours. Mathematicians are persistent (don’t give up) and learn to look at problems from different perspectives to find a solution.
